Changing your accountant does not need to be dramatic.
Misguided views of loyalty towards an accountant should be avoided if the accountant is not doing their job. You change or review (or at least you should) your insurance company when your policy is up for renewal so why not your accountant? Do you really feel you are getting the same value for money now, as you were at the beginning?
Ask yourself:
- When can you contact your accountant - whenever you have a question or only when they are preparing your final statement?
- Do you have their mobile number so you can contact them when they are on the go?
- How often does your accountant contact you?
- Do they let you know about new legislation or new laws coming into effect that may affect your business?
- Do they reply to your calls and emails in a timely fashion?
- Do they truly care about your business?
It may be time to think about switching if you answer no to any of the questions above.

If you change accountant, you will get an audit by Revenue.
Wrong.
A popular misconception is that Revenue will give you a surprise audit if you switch accountant. This is not the case. There are several reasons as to why your business might be selected for Revenue Audit – changing Accountants is not one of them.
My current accountant knows all about my business and a new one will have no idea about my business.

Maybe your current accountant is going through the motions. A new accountant may have new ideas and could save you quite a bit of money
I am worried my accountant may not let me change.
Wrong.
You are not forced to work with one accountant. You can change whenever you wish. Your accountant will be obligated to relinquish all your paperwork to whomever you decide to act on your behalf. Just make sure all your bills are up to date with them.
It is the middle of the year, I cannot change now.

Did you know that you can change whenever you want to? It does not have to be at the year end, or the beginning or middle of the year.
I will have to do all the paperwork and I am just not bothered.

Your new accountant can draft up all the paperwork, all you have to do is ask. They can even break up with your current accountant on your behalf, but it may make things easier if you sent them a letter yourself.
